The Story of Larry Talbot
Lawrence Stewart "Larry" Talbot (Chaney) returns to his ancestral home in Llanwelly, Wales to reconcile with his father, Sir John Talbot (Rains). While there, Larry becomes romantically interested in a local girl named Gwen Conliffe (Ankers). On a night of the full moon (which, oddly, is never seen in the film), he attempts to rescue her friend Jenny from what he believes to be a sudden attack by a wolf. He kills the beast with a silver-headed walking stick, but is bitten in the process. He soon discovers that it was not just a wolf; it was a werewolf, and now Talbot has become one. A Roma fortuneteller named Maleva (Ouspenskaya) reveals to Larry that the animal which bit him was actually her son Bela (Lugosi) in the form of a wolf. Bela had been a werewolf for years and now the curse of lycanthropy has been passed to Larry. Throughout the film, Larry is told by Gwen, Jenny, and his father: Even a man who is pure in heart/and says his prayers by night/may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms/and the Autumn moon is bright.(Contrary to popular belief, this poem was not an ancient legend, but was in fact an invention of screenwriter Siodmak. The poem is repeated (with minor changes) in every future film in which Talbot/The Wolf Man appears and is also heard in the later film Van Helsing) Sure enough, Talbot prowls the countryside in the form of a two-legged wolf. Struggling to overcome the curse, he is finally bludgeoned to death by his father with his own walking stick. As he dies, he returns to human form. The Wolf Man has the distinction of being the only classic Universal monster to be played by the same actor in all his classic 1940s film appearances.

YES! The wolfman is my favorite monster!
I'm glad that even death could not stop the wolfman after his initial outing, as he was back in action 2 years later, in "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man".
I can't begin to describe my disappointment with the 2004 film "Van Helsing"... my monster was absolutely butchered in that film.

I think Lon Chaney Rocks! to start off.. He played Larry Talbot great in The Wolfman, i couldnt see any one else in the role. I found his Character more interesting in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man as he went on to find Maleva and how once a dashing Man about Town, had become an outcast and on the run from the law. The resurection scene has to be one of my favourite scenes from that movie, with His transformation scene being the ultimate fave for me. I also liked how Lon played the Wolfman, It wasnt like in modern films of today where ya get people turning into a full blown wolf, Larry still had a lot of his Human qualities as the Wolman but at the same time had the Ferral agressivness of the Wolf.. I love who these kind of movies are made as well , with the dark atmospheric music and the mist in the wilderness sets.. It might look realistic compared to the fancy Cgi of today but to me it still gives of the creepy vibe and tone...

It looks more realistic to me than CGI. I prefer real effects whenever possible. CGI just doesn't look right to me.

Sometimes Cgi is great but when ya watch movies like this, its more about the atmosphere thats created and a good yarn and acted well than fancy effects.. Thats what i find so alluring by them.. Not only in Horror classics like The Wolfman, Dracula etc but in stuff like Buster Keaton movies or Harold Loyd shows, Laurel and Hardy etc.. These guys did stuff that was so risky and dangeous that no one in there right minds would contemplate doing these days.. But those guys back then, the show or movie was more than acting it was about timing and a perfect performance back when a chap would take his art seroiusly and not as another movie cash in..

Oh my god are you serious? They're redoing it again? What about the movie Wolf? I thought that was the remake! Wow I guess it's gonna be just like Van Helsing! Man no one will ever do it better than Lon Chaney Jr.

I remember seeing a movie a while back, a guy had a silver bullet with a hole in it to slip a necklace through and wear it. It just looked awesome, but it was a fairly recent movie, one made in the 80s and such... the title eludes me at the moment.
