In my opinion it's the best Dracula movie of all time. No one can approach Lugosi in his performance as Dracula. But I think the thing I want to comment on is the awesome documentary that came on the DVD. It's amazing how good it is. ANd how many things you learn from it. Like how Lugosi didn't turn down the role of Frankenstein. It turns out that during Dracula one of the people who produced Frankenstein had Lugosi act out the scene from Frankenstein of the Monster opening his eyes and getting up and decided he didn't like his look for the part. Or the fact that Lugosi wasn't the one who decided he was to be buried in the cape. It was his Son and wife who made that decision. I found it interesting that they discussed a lot of his problems with parts were that he wasn't willing to wait for better roles. He wanted to act so badly that he would take whatever role was offered to him. Which in the end hurt his career. But it also pointed out something that was so true. No matter what role he took he always played the part like it mattered. Even if only a couple people were watching he wanted to make sure they were being entertained. Dracula is his most famous role and it's for a good reason. He oozed sex appeal and an aura that I highly doubt anyone ever will again. I think the reason he made the character his was he wasn't acting or maybe he didn't really need to act with the part. Lugosi was Dracula.

I've never seen the original all the way through, and I know, that will make me an outsider, but then again so does my not liking the first Friday the 13th as much as the later ones.
But I do agree, Lugosi is Dracula. The look, the body build, the facial expressions, the voice, the hypnotic stare, not to mention when I hear the word "Dracula", his version automatically, without question or competition, pops into my head.
I do intend to get the original, I've read the novel. I'd like to see this film, it's on my list of things to do, on the Top Ten.

Thats great kwik
I would suggest you see the original 1931 Dracula though..
Its so worth it...
Lugosi is Dracula..all the other men who played Drac (christopher Lee Forgive me if i missed a few actors i had a couple of drinks this evening)
All studied from Lugosi's Dracula film..
Lugosi is the master of Dracula..
Some may argue that Christopher Lee was the man..but i can always defend the fact that lugosi will always be the one...
Yes Christopher Lee did a fantastic job as Dracula..Horror Of Dracula was an amazing film...
But Lugosi was limited..no Blood no gore..
Lee's Drac was like a lugosi's Drac with Tons Of gore

I absolutely loved Dracula 1931. There is a funny little story that goes along with me and that movie. You see, it was the very first classic Universal horror monster movie I ever saw. When I first saw it, I purchased it on tape with the Philip Glass score. I watched it and found it a little boring, though loved Bela's acting as the vampire. A couple years after that I went back and re-watched it and absolutely loved it. I loved Bela and Edward Van Sloan as Dracula and Van Helsing. Those two definitely influenced such hero/villain pair as Myers/Loomis, Batman/Joker, and Superman/Luther.

I too loved Lugosi as Dracula but found it a little boring at first watch. Yet as I got older I paid more attention and found it not boring at all.

I can understand that. When you are younger it can take more to entertain you. And you don't see the subtleties that make certain movies great. It's probably why a lot of younger people don't enjoy the original Halloween.

I have to admit one thing here. Though Bela is known for BEING Dracula, I think Nosferatu 1922 is the much scarier movie.

I agree. Lugosi's Dracula in the 1931 Universal film set the standard. There is no one who played the role better, and I liked Christopher Lee's and Frank Langella's portrayals of Dracula. But you can't beat a true classic.

Bela IS Dracula. There is no argueing that! Count Dracula, Van Helsing, and Renfield are the three characters that really carry that movie.
