Movies should be viewed the way that they were filmed.
If you are watching Metropolis, which is silent, B&W and fullscreen, of course you don't want it to be forced into widescreen just to fit a TV. That is coming to Blu-Ray soon and they are preserving the original aspect ratio.
Likewise, why bother watching something like Lord Of The Rings if it is a hacked up fullscreen version.
A great example of respecting the way a film was shot is TDK, as if you own it on Blu-Ray, the picture switches the different aspect ratio during the IMAX sequences.
The only case I can think of where an aspect ratio is painful to watch is when a widescreen film is non-anamorphic and on an HDTV.
A good example of this is the Star Wars Limited Edition DVD's, which have the unaltered theatrical versions as a bonus feature, but they are not anamorphic, so it look awful on an HDTV.
