We have all seen an example of this in a franchise, especially with superhero films.
The first two are good, but the third one is a huge disappointment.
A good example is Spider-Man 3, which got considerable negative reaction after two well received films.

I have the sam efeeling with Batman 3. Regardless of nolan or not. Killer croc is a really odd choice to me because of the style he is going and Croc just seems like a mistep to me. I was really hoping for black mask. I don't think TDKR is gonna be as huge as TDK and it could be the weakest of the 3 imo.

X-men 3. Good grief, who the hell kills off Professor X and Cyclops for God's sake. The movie was a massive mess. Only Wolvy tops it as far as messes goes >_>

Rebel believe it or not both did die in the comics but not like that and they were shortly resurrected lol.

Good call on X-Men 3.
As for TDKR, I know that they can't replicate TDK, which was essentially lightning in a bottle with its success. If it the film is good but not great, I will be satisfied.
If there is anyone who has the resume to break the curse, it is Nolan, as I don't think that he has made a critical flop yet. However, we will see what happens.
Another good example that came to mind is Terminator 3, which was a huge step down from the previous installments.

What about Superman 3? I haven't seen so I have no clue. I know 4 gets a lot of bashing from what I have heard.
By the way its fixing to be rebooted again. Was suppose to be Nolan but he changed his mind and the guy who remade Dawn of the Dead and did the movie Watchman is doing it now.

Yes, Superman 3 featured Richard Pryor and was not received well, but that is nothing compared to Quest For Peace, which was made so cheaply that they recycled scenes from the previous fims.
The franchise is being revived again and Nolan isn't directing but is consulting on it.

Some part 3's are pretty damn good or at least considered good. Halloween 3 is my second favorite in the franchise. I know around here Friday the 13th III is considered one of the best (not by me). I would agree though that there are a great deal of 3rd movies in francises that are pretty bad. I'm guessing it's just the average amount of time in a francise where idea start to run out.

Some folks hate Childs Play 3 . . .I do NOT.
I can't say Exorcist III as that is a masterpiece compared to II
Army of Darkness maybe?
Transformers three is coming out soon so that could be a a victim of the 3 ;D

Army Of Darkness is quite well received.
Transformers wasn't all that great to begin with, so I don't think it can fall victim to the curse. ;D

Oh yes Two more that just came to mind. Scream 3 is regarded as the worst of the trilogy. And I know what you did Last summer's third sequel may be the worst

Two more great examples.
Last Summer's third entry was the only one that skipped theaters.

I didn't know that about the Last summer ones, I haven't been THAT much of a fan of that series. I prefer Scream over those. Some more. . . . Many consider Amityville 3D to be weaker than the first two since its well 3D so its somewhat lighter. IT was also the last one to hit theaters as the next was made for TV and the remainder direct to video. Also to some extent, some do not like Hellraiser III HEll on Earth since it took a drastically different tone than the first two. I disagree as I like this one as well even though its not AS dark as the first two. The cenobites for this one were terrible though. A guy throwing records and a woman with a cigarrette, seriously

The first two Hellraiser movies were mostly about a dysfunctional family with some cenobites added in, but Hell On Earth loses that and has a lot of slasher content to it.
It is a decent movie, but I consider it to be a step down in quality.

Oh that Abraxis, I agree that it is more comical but you seem really against epicness ;D
Never seen Return III, I own Return II though on VHS, I was highly amused at that talking severed head!
I'm running out of random "threes" if I come up with more I'll point them out!

Texas Chainsaw 3 was okay despite the MPAA taking a chainsa wto it. Highlander 3 is the only other good Highlander aside from 1 of course

If TCM 4 was number 3 it would take the cake.
Oh and I saw Highlander 1 and 2 on VHS in a thrift store fore 1 dollar a piece a few days back and it reminded me of you ;D

I like the third ROTLD movie. It is a nice gory love story with a hot zombie chick.
The third TCM movie is actually quite watchable, with a highlight being the future Aragorn as as psychotic cannibal. The next one was an abomination though.
As for the Highlander movies, it wasn't hard to improve on the second one, although continuity is non existant in that franchise.

I agree with you on the Highlander films. But if anyone ever wanted a sequel to it 3 is the way to go. Too bad 1 and 3 are the only good ones
