Now, all of us know that TCM ( Texas Chainsaw Masscare for short) was inspired by mass murderer Ed Gein's bizarre explouts back in the 50's. But I started thinking about it and, this movie is kinda unique as opposed to the other slashers. How so? Well the myth of Leatherface, as a kid I heard Leatherface talked about much like Bigfoot or Chupacabra. Obviously Leatherface was still never real, but it is rather interesting how people think he's real ( yes I know Ed Gein was technically Leatherface but he was more Buffalo Bill and Norman Bates than Leatherface) but what do you guys think?

You make a very good point. The story behind TCM is actually quite realistic and the gritty, documentary style feel certainly helps out with that. There is no magic or supernatural factor involved.

In fact, when I was a kid I literally thought Leatherface was real. I knew nothing of Ed Gein at the time and thought this actually occured. Not many films have done that to me ( Blair Witch Project being the only other) I think TCM works as both a film and a myth, even today I meet people who think it was real.

I Did Too, And Even Up to Date I Still Have to Remind Myself Once In A While That He/It Still Ain't Real, Kinda Of A Mindset I Brought Up Since Childhood, With The Things You Hear And Saw, People Process It Different Ways. Since Growing Up Though I Always Kinda Tell Myself When You Want To See Real, Bizarre, Documentary, Realistic etc Out Of Them All He Comes Down To The Realest.

Yup. I find it that even with the internet and the fact that mere google search would show you results of Ed Gein, that people still think it happened. Doesn't help that Ed Gein isn't that relevant or mainstream as Ted Bundy or Charles Manson.

What I think is amazing is they were able to trick people again with the new TCM films. There are copies of the police footage from the remake on Youtube with people absolutely convinced it's real footage. ;D Do these people think the original TCM was just a story and NOW it's real? I guess there really is a sucker born every minute.
