This time the action is moved to the U.S., where Count Alucard shows up to be the guest of honor at some rich people's homes, the daughter of which has invited him because she knows he's a vampire. You see, she's really freaky and wants to live forever. She gets a nice love triangle going between herself, her fiancée, and Alucard and soon all kinds of hell break loose.
Now here this movie was a great idea. Just because Lon Chaney, Jr. did great as a werewolf does not mean he could pull off a vampire just as easily but he did.
He's probably the best Count Dracula (or Count Alucard as he's called for most of the beginning of the film...just spell it backwards and you'll get it) I've ever seen besides Lugosi. He carries over the great persona he had in the original Wolf Man, and in most of his films, and comes across scary threw much of the film.
The effect in this movie were amazing! They had finally gotten the bat-changing-into-vampire thing down, and most of the time Alucard would travel as a mist that could creep under doorways and such. The smoke effects still look great. The atmosphere and acting were excellent! The DVD can be found ONLY in the Dracula Legacy DVD Collection! The picture transfer is brilliant! And I am very picky about that, the sound was great as well. A Dracula movie all Dracula fans would enjoy!
4.5 out of 5 Stars!

Mick Talyor would probably know that better than me. I'm a straight up Universal guy myself. Never had the cash to check out the Hammer stuff... is it any good?

Is it any good..? HELL YEAH! I recently completed my Christopher Lee 'Dracula' collection not so long ago with "Dracula AD 1972". I'm sure you can pick up "Horror of Dracula" pretty cheap these days. That's the 1st outing with Chris Lee & Peter Cushing. A must-own dvd! Buy it now!!

Mick Talyor would probably know that better than me. I'm a straight up Universal guy myself. Never had the cash to check out the Hammer stuff... is it any good? Hammer stuff Is kinda the Next Generation of classics after Universal stuff it branches out from Dracula and goest into all kinda aspects of horror.. Some of the movies are quite dark, some are a bit diff but its like some Universal stuff theres always something better in the series.. Peter Cushing stars in a fair few of the films as does Christopher lee.. Worth checking out if you get the chance...

Fantastic review!..i have one question before i watch this movie tonight.. Is alucard The son of Bela Lugosi's character from Dracula, sinse its called son of Dracula and Bela does not return.... Thanks! I'm glad you liked the review! Count Alucard (Lon CHaney Jr.) is the actual son of Dracula (Bela Lugosi). Chaney is not playing Dracula (Bela Lugosi's role) at all, it's clear that he is a decendant only. Bela is "dead" during the time these events take place so he is not in it. Which is a good thing, because if "Dracula" was in it they probably woulda used John Carridine and this movie woulda been flawed just as House of Frankenstein and House of Dracula were with him as Dracula...Worth checking out if you get the chance... Thanks I did I bought "Horror of Dracula" which is basically "Dracula" part 1... I thought it was well done but I like the Universal releases better.

Great Tommy..i respect the plot..if it was a remake of Bela's Dracula,,i don't think i would like it as much...
Whooo the plot sounds good,,can't wait to slide this in my dvd player tonight... ------------------------------------
Ok i saw this movie and i wanted to comment before i went to bed. The movie was great, nice effects for a 1943 film//
Lon Chaney Jr did a respectable performance,,but for me was still missing something..He just didn't seem scary to me..maybe because i was use to Bela Lugusi's evil stare you down look(Like what you see in my banner)..Lon was too"Romantic" for me..but overall great performance,..Son of Dracula comes second to Bela's Dracula IMO
I score it 7.5/10 great film for any collector,,of classic universal marvel...

The effects were awesome! I was like wow,,the vapor and mist was really cool..more advanced than the 1931 film for sure..
Son of Dracula also had more Dialog than the 1931 Dracula as well.

Actually I disagree. I think he was scary. In the scene where he confronts his new wifes ex and stares him down after basically chokeslamming him through a door. That was chilling. I mean the guy shoots him not harming him in the slightest. And he just gives him a look that is just evil. I don't think he had any other scary moments besides that. but that scene definitely came across as scary. I think Chaney was excellent as Dracula. I do think though that they could have given him more to do. I think they focussed too much on everyone else and not enough on him. It was a great movie. And he's definitely my second favorite Dracula. But I feel they could have really beefed up his part.
