Considering that Platinum Dunes seems to like doing things in a darker/grittier tone I think this could be pretty good.

With the way technology is, they could always make Freddy Krueger computer generated, and look like a young Robert Englund in the process. It'd be an interesting way of keeping the character alive, as well as a look that is so embedded into our Horror culture.
As for people wanting to go back to a scary Freddy, I don't think it's exactly possible. For one, people are so used to Horror films that it's become second nature. You may get a cheap scare, but I can do that by coming up behind you when you are not paying attention. I think, for the most part, especially with films like Saw and Hostel being embraced by young audiences, that nothing will ever strike them as terrifying -- and due to this, film makers realize scary is not as profitable as gross out gore, or over the top antics (I.E., Rob Zombie's Halloween).

I knew it.We have to let go and embrace whatever the future brings.
I personally don't care,as long as Freddy the character never dies i'm happy.
Robert will never be forgotten. Nothing ever lasts forever anyway.

I really don't know,After reading your Ben Foster suggestion i think he could probably do it.
Maybe if you had a list i could decide better.

I just saw his name as a suggestion among many made by people on AICN.com I don't even remember who else was suggested. But he really stuck out to me due to how much of his work I've seen and how well he plays someone who's disturbed. He's even got the right build for the part in my opinion. Whoever takes the role will probably be afraid of getting type cast. So I don't see any A listers trying to get the role. I'm just curious how they plan on approaching/writing the character.

After doing some research i found a picture of Ben Foster that is convincing me he can probably do it.
I think he can actually make the Freddy character scary. He has a certain energy ,same type of energy Robert Englund had in the first nightmare. I could be wrong.

The voice is the easiest to fix.Computer editing could do the trick.Studios always use voice editing. They also used voice editing with the Pinhead Character from hellraiser.
The more i think about Ben playing Freddy the more i dig it. I was thinking about something for second,i would love to hear what you guys think about it.
Do you think it would be a good idea if PD decided to make 6 more nightmare films that took place before the original part 1? In other words 6 prequels.Kinda like what they did with star wars. The sixth PD nightmare would lead right into Robert Englund's first nightmare film.I came up with this idea considering the fact that Ben might be a little too young to play Freddy. In the original Robert Englund nightmare-Freddy was in his mid 40's.Ben is in his mid 20's,big difference.
Just an idea, please feel free to say it stinks.

I would prefer Englund but I will give any movie a fair chance. Maybe it will be great and maybe it will suck, guess we'll have to wait and see.

Just an idea, please feel free to say it stinks. So basically taking the prequel idea and stretching it for 6 movies? I'll admit it's been awhile since I've seen the first Nightmare. So maybe I'm forgetting. But did they ever mention that Freddy had been doing the Dream Demon thing before that film? In other words was there a history of other teens dying in the town before Nancy and her friends? If not I suppose they could write it where there were others before. But how they could do it where those deaths weren't mentioned in the existing movies would be an interesting writing challenge. They definitely couldn't do 6 films about him being the Springwood Slasher. As interesting as a mortal Freddy without powers would be to see I couldn't see him carrying 6 films. And truthfully I think it might be best if they didn't try and connect these new movies to the originals. They didn't do it with the TCM films. If they are going to try to start with a new series then I think they need to separate in every way but basic plot lines and character traits. And I definitely think Foster would be right. I think his role in 30 Days of Night probably convinced me the most. He was creepy as hell in that. And he wasn't even one of the vampires. LOL

Robert Englund rules as Freddy and I prefer him and doubt anyone could play him better. With his age though I'd be open to change. Personally, I think it would be silly not to watch the film just because he wouldn't be playing the part. There is nothing wrong with having loyalty to him though.

I wish Heath Ledger were alive. Seeing his portrayal as the Joker in "The Dark Knight" theatrical trailer, he probably would've made a scary Freddy as well. He scared me just being Joker. Imagine him with the krueger make-up on!

LOL Thanks Kyle,6 prequels would definitely not work. After thinking about it, connecting the film with the previous films would also be a bad move-Right now fans are highly upset about this remake-if PD connects it with the previous nightmares people won't be watching it for enjoyment, they're gonna compare.
How about this idea,With the remake they make the beginning show Freddy before he gets burned .He kills the kids on elm street then the parents burn him,During the second hour of the movie he stalks the parents kids in their dreams.Of course one of the kids fight back(Nancy or a new character).
The new Freddy would be very evil, very scary and no humor.

That's exactly what I want to see. There has been a trend of explaining horror characters lately. In most cases I think it's pretty stupid. But showing a more detailed back story about Freddy in chronological order instead of the flash backs we've previously seen. And I want it to be dark and scary. If there has to be humor I want it dark. To the point where it's almost disturbing. Not wise cracks to get a laugh.

That would be the greatest nightmare ever.Look how serious and scary Freddy was in part 2.When he came out of that kids chest he looked so damn evil.In the pool party scene he looked bad ass too.
I'm pretty sure PD could pull this off. Ben IMO could also do a great job.

The dark Freddy we saw back in Nightmare 1 and New Nightmare is the Freddy I hope they use. In nightmare 2 I guess it never worked seeing how there were human dogs, LOL.
