Depp doesn't care what the critics think. He just enjoys acting.I'm pretty sure if he's offered a role in the new nightmare remake,he'll take it. I don't think acting in horror movies is low or would lower his standards either. Depp could be Freddy or Luke Skywalker. Acting is acting. I dont consider slashers as low either but they are considered low in Hollywood. There arent too many Oscars won with horror films. I'd love to see Depp as Freddy. Johnny Depp does like to go for those odd, strange roles. Beats the living hell outta Billy bob Thorton ;D Exactly! If he wants to continue this path to an Oscar win that he has started, he needs to choose his roles carefully to keep his profile high. Plus, casting a lesser known guy keeps the budget way down and the focus on the movie itself instead of just Depp.

I don't think Depp has been aiming for an Oscar. I don't get the impression he'd care. He acts because he enjoys acting. Not critical acclaim or acceptance by Hollywood. Just look at the varied and different movies he's taken. If he was worried about awards he wouldn't have done half the films he's done. The Oscars are a joke. It's a clique where you have to play safe roles that don't stray from what TPTB think are award worthy. It's a very elitist view they take on what they'll even consider worthy of a nomination. The fact that The Dark Knight is getting nominations for categories outside technical aspects of film making is amazing. Comic book, sci-fi and horror movies are almost universally excluded from real nominations and awards.

It is just easier and cheaper to get an unknown to play Freddy, and the people making the remake know that, hence the Ben Foster buzz. PD makes lower budget films, and Depp isn't a low budget guy these days.

I do hate TDK. I will give it props for garnering awards though. Just because I don't feel it's warrants nomination doesn't mean I'm not impressed it got them. A comic book movie getting nominations out side of effects etc. is rare. Maybe if it wins those awards Hollywood will quit being so snobby about nominating genres it's ignored for decades.
I never said I thought the Depp rumor was true. Or that I want him to play the role. I said I could see him doing it and that I doubt he'd turn his nose up at the opportunity if it was given to him due to it being a horror remake. He'd probably turn it down due to scheduling conflicts or poor writing. I would prefer it was a current nobody in Hollywood myself. I'd love Foster. I've been saying that for months. In fact I mentioned him as someone I'd like to see before the 'buzz'. I have no clue what the first thread I mentioned it in was though. I'd guess it's somewhere in this section. XN and I had a discussion and I posted pics of Foster to let those who may not know him see who I was talking about.

What TDK is doing is similar to Return Of The King winning 11 of 11 Oscars it was nominated for despite being a fantasy film (the "f" word of the Academy as Peter Jackson called it). I know you weren't saying Depp was a lock, as I do enjoy his quirky, off beat roles, but his star has grown beyond this kind of thing. www.imdb.com/name/nm0000136/If IMDB is accurate, he is booked for years. Three best actor nominations is rather impressive.

Alright Jer,calm down now. Everyone is entitled to their opinion here.We shouldn't have to go in defense mode every time someone disagrees. We heard your opinion.
Thankyou.

I am calm. I am giving the reality of the situation, and that is that an unknown or someone with a lower profile is smarter to cast to keep costs down, especially in these tough economic times. Even then, the Englund=Freddy mentality won't go away, so this remake already has something going against it, just as Zombie's involvement in the Halloween remake did. Plus, I didn't know that salaries, IMDB and business stats and certified celeb status counted as opinions and not facts.

I don't think Depp will take the role as he is booked, but if he had the time I am sure he would. He's one of those actors who could be in anything and people will go see it, especially younger audiences. I bet when he took the role of Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean he didn't expect to be taken seriously. Audiences flocked to see the film and made them a huge success, I doubt Disney was aiming for even a fraction of what those film raked in, especially considering how much of a "joke" pirates are.
But I do agree the chances of him taking the role are slim, he's booked solid. Though that's the only reason I think he wouldn't take it, not because he concerns himself with his acting status.

I agree with you completely. If he had the time I think he would definetly consider it because Freddy himself is a great character and it seems that he bases his choices on the character of a role more than anything else.

Good Point. I know he'll never take it but its still fun to think about what an actor like Depp could do with this role.

To me, he would ruin it. I don't want to see a name actor like Johnny Depp playing Freddy.

Yeah, you don't want one person's massive star power to overthrow everything else in the movie.
Englund is famous, but not a huge star, so it worked out for the films he did.

Normally - I would say that I wouldn't want to see a big name actor like Depp take on Freddy either. But then again- it would be interesting to see him come full circle (from the first film to the last).
Because he was in the first - he may really be able to tap into the esscence of the character and the film.
He has a history with the original , and that could take him a long way in giving a truly menacing performance.

It may be greedy for me to say this but I think it would be cool to see his take on the character. It'd be greedy though because people would focus on him to the detriment of the film.

Yes, my point exactly.
When NOES first came out in 1984, Englund wasn't a household name so people found Freddy to be scary without focusing on the guy playing him, which happened later on as the series became all about one liners.

Oh I know. I'd prefer an unnamed for the real release of the film. But it would be pretty interesting to see him do the part.
