Mark Hamill's voice, to me, is how I have always 'heard' the Joker when thinking of him, or reading anything on him. It always has been, and Ledger's performance, regardless of the praise it received, hasn't come close to replacing that.
Ledger could act the part, but his voice, I just wasn't feeling it. He sounded like Scruff McGruff, that anti-drug canine law hound that wanted to take a bite out of crime.
To the others, Nicholson had the charisma down. And Romero definitely LOOKED the part, so major props to them.

i liked them all. they were each playing a different joker however in the 60s Joker was a comedic thief in the 80s he was a prankster who liked to kill in the 90s he was a mobster who was psychotic and now he's basically just a psychopath

I think all these guys are essential. Each of them brought their own touch to the character...When I think of the Joker, bits and pieces of all these guys come to mind. It's hard to say which one is best because each portrayal reflects a different side of the Joker...The character has evolved over the years...Each of these actors did a great job respectively...The Joker is an icon....He has changed/ evolved over the course of his career...It just depends on what time period and writer you favor. I like them all for different reasons.(Just my opinion)

I feel from best to worse was
Cesar Romero
Heath Ledger
Jack Nicholson
The only reason I think Ledger was better than Nicholson was... well two things. I think Ledger got far better writing! That can really help 2nd Jack just kinda seemed like Jack with white face paint to me. While Heath disappeared into the character we saw on screen.
I haven't seen enough of Hamil to judge.

IMO Jack ad all the best qualities of the Joker. He wa maniacal systematic, controled. Smart as a whip and had a demonic killer instict!! Not to mention a warped sense of humor!!! Besides he coined the phrase "Where does he get those wonderful toys?"

Okay, this poll is riduclous. Why? Because Romero portrayed the Joker at a time where Batman comics were cartoonish, so its totally different than the others, Jack Nicholson had himself in the role, so hes shot, Mark Hamill was also cartoonish (90's kids animated series) and now Ledger, who is a dark humor badass in a time when the comics are dark and gritty. They are all incompareable.
So I voted Ledger ;D

yeah darknees, but in the 1990s cartoon the joker did kill people. he'd give them those horrific smiles and i was actually leaning more towards the mask of the phantasm movie in that selection. it's as chchch said. the Joker has changed over the years each actor plays a part of the joker. and in the next 10 years he'll probably be more different than how ledger portrayed him. i'm not saying ledger did a bad job he did an amazing job but it's the character that changes over the decades. so please just pick which Joker you liked the most okay.

I haven't seen enough of Hamil to judge. Considering he only did the voice, you won't be seeing much of him, lol. But I believe his voice was brilliant, how he could expand and stretch it, it was incredible. I didn't need to see the Joker when he spoke, I got an image when he talked. So I voted Ledger ;D The whole 1960s Batman was cartoonish. Even if the Joker was a sadistic murderer, anyone that appeared on that show was toned down. Nicholson may have suffered from questionable writing, but several scenes his charisma comes out. Yeah as Demon said, it may have been Jack Nicholson in face paint, but it was entertaining nonetheless. As for the 1990s Batman. You are right, no one was killed, but people did die. Batman's parents, for one. They could not show the act of killing, but it could be implied and it was. But for the sake of toning things down, they went with Joker leaving people with those hideous frozen face grins, a fate worse than death many could say. Ledger had incredible writing, and the make up crew did a superb job as well. However, I still think his voice was lacking the "umpf" needed, it sounded like Scruff McGruff to me. Not to say he was bad, Ledger was quite a distance from it, but a VERY important aspect of the Joker isn't what he says, but how he says it. Ledger may have had the killer lines in The Dark Knight, but Hamill had the tone.

Sure he looks like Mark Hamill's Joker in the comics, but you can picture him sounding like Ledger's Joker.

Why is this poll Ridiculous? Because you still can't overcome your ignorance and arrogant ways of opinion. Why insult the great performance Romero did? What exactly is your problem with Romero? Is it because hes Cuban?
Haven't you learned from the last thread involving Romero that when you insult his character you also insult his fans,or do you not have any type of sense or understanding when it comes to other peoples feelings.Or maybe you're just lacking and you need to do more research before you open your painted mouth.
We all respect Ledger on this forum, but your ignorance is highly intolerable.

I think you guys are taking it wrong. I never said all other jokers except ledger were bad, I simply voted for Ledger but claimed how they were all hard to compare because they were portrayed in different time periods.
