American scientist Dennis Allan travels to Haiti to investigate the report of a drug that renders people totally paralyzed but conscious, causing many doctors to mistakenly declare the victim dead. It is believed that this drug is what has caused the natives to believe people are rising from their graves and becoming zombies. Allan is soon thrust into a world of social upheaval, superstition, and the unknown as he begins to question what science has taught him.
Based on the book by real life anthropologist Wade Davis and directed by Wes Craven, we get not only a study on the Haitian superstitions of voodoo and zombies, but also a political commentary on the revolution that overthrew hated Haiti dictator Jean Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier. Craven has had alot of hits and misses over the years, and I have to rate this as one of his better pictures.

I also love the exploration of where Zombies came from. I mean Haiti is where the original and first stories of Zombies came from. And it's pretty amazing how differently they started out.

Very true. Its interesting and creepy. I think the events in serpent and the rainbow really took/takes place.Thats really scary to go through something like that.
People thinking you're dead but you're not.
Waking up in a box with no way to get out 2 or 3 days after your funeral.
Crazy.

I used to like this movie when I was a kid. I have to watch it again to see how I feel about it. The Voodoo in it used to fascinate me.

This is one of the films I have always wanted to see but never gotten around to it, but I've always heard good things.

Lat time I tried to watch it I fell asleep. It was kind of long and boring I thought.
Maybe I was wrong and I need to try again, I dunno.
