Honestly, I haven't seen a Mummy film the entire way through. Not even the newer ones that came out not too long ago, though I did like that concept for the newer ones. As for the classic Mummy, it just didn't seem to click with me, but maybe I should give it another go.

I am not a huge fan of the first Mummy movie even though historians say it's amazing. I am a big fan of the sequals... I believe the 3rd one in which Lon Chaney finally plays the Mummy is the best one so far. I started watching Part 4 last night at 4am but fell asleep. I havent watched the last one yet.
Abbott and Costello meet the Mummy was an excellent movie! I suggest that you go out of your way to pick up all the A&C meet monster movies. It's a great introduction and even if the monster isn't doing it for you A&C will carry it threw.

Abbott and Costello movies, I've seen a few... just been a while, a long while. I remember one where they were being chased by a lot of classic movie monsters, eventually running outside and hoping into a boat or something to escape. Good stuff.

Okay I now have officially watched every Mummy and here's what I think. I love them! It is absoluetly a solid series and I am sad that I never really paid attention to the Mummy :duh: I always blew him off like he was nothing... I was wrong... he is very cool and has 5 solid movies! I'm serious they are solid flicks.
So if anyone else has doubts I hope this helps. They are really good

It's kind of hard to compare the later movies to the first one. The story was so different. With the first one it was more of a love story than a horror/monster movie. I like Lon Chaney Jr. as the Mummy more. But that's because you actually see him as the Mummy for some length of time in his movies.

I love the original Mummy movie. Boris Karloff plays an awesome character. I loved the beginning when the rotting mummy slowly opens his eyes and begins to move. That is some creepy stuff. Then you see it's hand. Then you see the bandages dragging along the ground as it is walking away. The effectiveness of that scene is how they start you off by showing you the mummy and the eyes open and the hand and your imagination has to finnish the imagery.
I am not a fan of the second Mummy movie at all. It is basically a usless remake of the first one with a mummy monster not acted greatly and the leads and story is not great. I love the next three movies with Lon Chaney Jr. though.
The Boris Mummy story was told in a different way then the Lon ones were, but I love both versions of the character for different reasons.
The new Mummy movie by Steve Summers is more based on the Karloff Mummy rather then the Chaney one. It was a fun movie, but newer movies just are not as effective as the older ones in my view. The older ones had a certain feel to them that just can not be duped anymore because we are living in very different times.
I srongly suggest you give the original another chance. Don't go into it thinking you are going to see a wrapped up zombie with it's arms stretched out for an hour. Go into it with the mindset that you are going to watch a film with character depth and a sympethetic character.
Go and get yourself The Mummy Legacy Collection. After you have watched the original, then have some fun with the Chaney movies. Part 2 is skipable.
