I know this happened a long, long time ago, but the story is still amazing. A radio station would re-inact from the novel "War of the Worlds", and it sent the nation into a panic thinking that real U.F.O.s had landed. It had the entire country scared, and just from a radio show! Not many things can claim it scared a nation, movie or radio, but this did, and it is why I feel it is deserving of being mentioned in this section of the Forum.

I remember a twilight zone episode about this family that had a bomb shelter and they didnt want to share with anyone when they heard about that they were going to get hit by missles and it was just a host or a false alarm and the whole neighborhood paniced and wanted to get into their bomb shelter after they complained about the noise when they were building it. it was a good one it kind of reminds me of the war of worlds broadcast...

This either happened in 1936 or 1938. I heard alot of people got hurt. And telephone services where jammed for all of 5 to 10 minutes.

You could probably download the broadcast from any P2P program (BearShare, KaZaA, Ares, etc), or find it at the public library. Also, since the new movie has spawned an interest in the subject, you could find it on any typical search engine by typing in "War of the Worlds broadcast", or something along those lines. I, myself, do not have the broadcast, but I remember hearing it back in the Third Grade for some project we did involving soundwaves and stuff, it was fun. Here's some more information... members.aol.com/jeff1070/wotw.html

Found this old topic, it was on the last page (but at the top) of the Everything Else Horror thread. I figured since War of the Worlds is in Classic Horror, I may as well bring this topic here as well, since it dealt with fear and the mentality of American culture during the era of Classic Horror films.

Download here: www.mercurytheatre.info/ I have yet to listen to it. I remember seeing a Perversions of Science episode based on the broadcast. Legitimate Martians are at a costume party acting as normal humans, but the broadcast sends them into a comedic false alarm where everyone is killed and they botch the mission. The episode is titled Panic.

Pretty sure it's also on the original 'War of the Worlds' dvd too. (That's the new special edition!)
