Plot:
In 1921 a team of British archaeologists led by Sir Joseph Whemple uncovers the 3700 year old mummy of Imhotep. When one young archaeologist opens the scroll of Thoth, he goes delirious and the Mummy comes to life. 10 years later Sir Joseph returns with his son Frank. Unknown to them, the Mummy now exists as the mysterious Egyptian, Ardath Bay, who helps the expedition uncover the tomb of his ancient love. He then uses his mystic powers mesmerize the reincarnation of his lost love in the form of Helen Grosvenor. When Sir Joseph interferes he mysteriously dies. Frank Whemple, with the help of Dr. Muller, attempts to discover the key to Ardath Bay's powers and get Helen back.
Acting:
The acting is over the top grade A stuff.
Boris Karloff is great as usual; dignified, somber, with careful economy of movement to suggest he really is a dusty old corpse walking around, he is completely convincing. A lot of close-ups of that immobile face* and intense glare give Ardath Bey a presence and charisma that is equal to Lugosi's Dracula . Karloff is by a huge margin my all-time favorite actor in horror films. Edward van Sloan is always good, too, although he usually played the same gruff wise old man who leads the fight against the supernatural. Zita Johann does a good job showing Helen's torn loyalties between her two lives and she does have a Charisma which fits the role.
Bottom Line
This movie is well acted and does a nice setup for Kharis the mummy..By introducing to us the Original and mighty Imo-Ho-Tep
I recommend you watch it
