I was curious before i left for my evening walk in the woods to see who everybody likes best
Who is your favorite Classic Actor..
This is a very hard question, especially for me because i love them all dearly..but i choose Boris Karloff as my Favorite

Lon Chaney Jr. gets my vote as The Wolfman is my favorite classic horror flick. All are good though!

Boris Karloff for me. I think he was the better actor of the two. He also wasn't an alcoholic as far as I know. That's probably why he had the most respectable career out of all of the classical horror actors on the list. I know Chaney Jr. was an Alcoholic and Lugosi had drug problems. I think both those problems affected their careers negatively unfortunately.

Every one has problems..

Every one has problems.. Just to say he was an alcoholic doesnt mean that he wasnt a great actor... He ruled in the films ive seen him in Alco boy or not... Oh I never said he wasn't a great actor. He was excellent. But his career like Bela's was affected by his alcoholism. It's why their last several roles were so laughable. They'd let their demons take over their lives unfortunately. Whereas Karloff had a much more distinguished end to his life. Sure he wasn't winning Oscars. But he lived longer and was doing voice overs for shows like The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Chaney Jr. had Alcoholism so bad he had to shoot his parts early in the day and told the directors he worked with that. Even back during filming of The Wolf Man I believe he told the director you need to film me early or I'm not going to be any use to you. I'm not trying to put the man down. Or Bela for that matter. They were both awesome actors. Horror from that time wouldn't have been the same without them. It's just a damn shame they didn't have clinics to help alcoholics like they do now. It's good that he had enough control of it early in his life to know when he was able to work. It's just too bad he didn't take it the next step and try to control it by recognizing the problem that alcohol was causing that it was limiting the time of day he was able to work. But I guess by that point he was to addicted to beat it by himself.

IFdude Bela didn't to the Grinch Stole Xmas Karloff did. Also I wouldnt base this question on what they could have done if whatever drug they did held them back at the end. I think the questions os more of when they did act who did the best or who did you just like more. Even if Chaney only did the Wolfman films of Universal then you base it on that. Not whether or not it prevented more work in the future. I know youre just mentioning it but I dont thinking drinking or herion stopped Chaney or Bela from giving perfect performances.

I was just mentioning how they might have ranked higher with me if they had better careers that hadn't been messed up by their alcohol/drug use. I think Karloff was the better actor because he had better roles over his entire career. Well that and I really do think he was just the better actor of the 3. He had more range with his ability. Bela was limited due to his language problems and style and Chaney who had more range was limited by his alcoholism taking over his life and limiting the roles he could take. I really think Karloff was the best Horror actor of their generation. Followed closely by Chaney then Lugosi.
