I finally got a chance to see this and it was a really good one!
At the beginning I found it really touching how they just left little Gwynplaine all alone in that frozen waste land. I found the dead bodies that were hung by the gallows really disturbing.
I really felt for the kid, having to indoor all of that death and suffering. I also was really touched by how he was brave enough to save the baby from the freezing cold after it's mother died.
While he took care of the baby he stumbles a pond a traveling showman(Ursus) who adopted him and the baby. He finds out that the baby is blind and calls her Dea, he also finds out that Gwynplaine has a permanent smile that was carved on his face by the King, Comanchicos, in revenge for Gwynplaine's father's treachery!
Years latter, Ursua becomes popular and makes Gwynplaine famous and nicknames him, "The Man Who Laughs". Gwynplaine falls in love with Dea and so dose Dea with him, but Gwynplaine doesn't feel like he deserve to have her heart cause she will never know what he really looks like and he's a shamed of his looks as well.
Latter after setting up at a small village, King Comanchicos'(Who is long gone by now.) evil jester, Barkilphedro finds out that Gwynplaine is alive and plots to a means to be rewarded by the Queen. The Queen then plans to get Duchess Josiana to marry Gwynplaine, but Gwynplaine refuses to obey the Queen's demand and escapes from the castle.
This is a great movie and it's one of the only silent movies I ever saw that has dialog, yeah! After Gwynplaine is captured by the Queen's guards, the village people(Not the band! ;D) wants to see him, and shouts out his name!
So check this one out, you be glad you did!
I give it a 5 out of 5 Clowns!
