Hello one and all, it's I, Voorhees666 here, just wanting to get some help for downloads on my new iMac (my Christmas present to myself ;D). And I wondered if someone could help me with downloading AIM and Windows Live Messenger onto it. Here's the problem: Every time I try to download AIM 4.7 for the Macintosh-based OS, it appears it saves it as a .bin file ('MacBinary') and Microsoft Excel keeps trying to open. Anyone know how to get around this? It'd be appreciated, thanks.

Anyway you need to right click the file and choose get info. It will open a window where you can choose what program to open the file with. I usually use Stuffit expander to open .bin files. So that is what you should set yours for. In the info window you can set it to open it once that way or to change it so it always opens .bin files with Stuffit Expander.

Yeah, it's one of the new Intel-based ones. But I'm not technically sure it can run it (sorry, Internet was out all afternoon), also I'm not sure if I have StuffIt Expander or not :S I mean, I tried opening it with StuffIt, but it still came out as a '.bin' file, and what version of Windows do you recommend I download it for?

Okay, just downloaded them for Windows XP, but it says the Mac doesn't have the proper applications to use 'em. Any ideas?

o.k why are you running Windows XP on the Mac? Most people who get a Mac get it for Mac OS X. Because they like not having to worry about viruses etc. The only time I'd use the WIndows on the Mac is if you have a program that requires it. Otherwise use the Mac OS. In that case just download the Mac versions. You don't need to download AIM for the Mac because it has a chat program built in thatyou can use for AIM called iChat. If you want the official version for the Mac then here's the link. www.download.com/AOL-Instant-Messenger/3000-2146_4-10264330.html?tag=lst-0-1I'm guessing Windows Live is the same thing as MSN messenger. in that case you can get that here. www.download.com/MSN-Messenger-Mac-OS-X-/3000-2146_4-10555351.html?tag=lst-0-1I really would suggest you use Mac OS for the most part. there are a lot less headaches that way. If you have a Mac get the benefits from having one. Namely no viruses. Or worrying about them. Because you still have to worry about infecting the part of the hard drive partitioned to Windows when you run it on a Mac. At least that's what I've heard. In both cases the files I've directed you to are in the .dmg file format. Basically once you click them they act like if you inserted a cd or dvd and mount on your Desktop. They'll open a new Window in finder. All you have to do is drag the program in the folder into the applications folder and then you'll be able to run that program. To get the folder the files you just got off your desktop you just right click and choose eject.

Ah heh, thanks for all the help, IFDude, but I actually found a program that can work equally well, dubbed 'Fire' (it allows you to have buddies from MSN/Windows Live, AIM, Yahoo!, etc.) on it. But I'll still try your way because I'd much rather prefer using AIM than Fire.

If you decide you like using a multiple IM program that is. I prefer it myself. It takes up less RAM to run one program and it's super customizable.
