I didn't want to derail the other thread any more, so here is a place for discussion.
As I mentioned, when Carpenter and Co. envisioned Halloween, it was a simple story about a boy who snapped and killed his sister, and was then institutionalized and escaped from Smith's Grove for more.
We aren't told why he kills his sister, why he escapes or why he chooses Laurie as his next target.
This character is known as The Shape.
Of course, it doesn't last long, as the movie is the most successful independent film of all time until Blair Witch, so they get working on a sequel.
Not too long into it, we are introduced to the sister angle, killing The Shape off for good.
Now we have Michael Myers trying to kill his family members, specifically his sister and later his niece.
The mystery is gone at that moment, and is completely destroyed when cults and curses are brought into play.

I believe that The Shape is Michael Myers' split personality, that they are simply two entities who exsist in the same body. The Shape is the person who killed Judith Myers, The Shape tried to kill Laurie Strode, The Shape is the killer in 1 and 2. Michael Myers is the killer in the rest.

The Shape doesn't exist in Halloween 2, as the motive is present.
The problem with the multiple personalities theory is that people with that condition struggle with both, but in Michael's case he has no problem setting it aside.

Actually I think we can pinpoint a reason why Michael chooes Laurie in the first Halloween. I always believed he fixated on her from the moment she dropped off the keys at his old house and he saw her through the window. Its the same reason I think he followed Tommy to school ans was there when he got harassed by the bullies.

Actually Jer one personality can dominate the other complietely, like for example Norman Bates at the end of Psycho was completely dominated by Mother

She was just a random girl though and certianly not his sister.
Halloween and Psycho are completely different movies though.
There is no multiple personality disorder element in Halloween, just ask John Carpenter considering he co- wrote and directed it.
The story is simple.

You do realize that the idea of The Shape came from a 12 year old mental patient Carpenter met while on a class trip to a mental hospital right?

That doesn't really matter though, as it is an issue of knowing or not knowing.
Halloween was lightning in a bottle and is the only film in the franchise to feature a character that has an unknown motive.

Very true, even if he did have D.I.D there is no known reason why he targeted Laurie.

I always thought it was an obvious chance encounter in the beginning at the house and then he overhears Laurie defending the house and then singing that song " I wish I had you all alone just the two of us" and he develops some sort of crush and doesn't know how to handle it so he stalks her.
