One thing I have noticed is that if a director makes famous and/or classic films early in their career, the latter part is made up of stinkers.
Look at Romero, who has lost his touch, or Wes Craven, whose latest effort is getting trashed.
John Carpenter also went downhill and Dario Argento's Mother Of Tears was not received well.
Time doesn't treat masters of horror kindly.

I think it has alot to do with the fact that when they were starting out they had to be creative in how they told the story since their budgets were non-existent. That kind of creativity and overall care makes a better product than when they just sit back and pay the money for an effect. Back then there was a general love of horror and film making and now its more like 'get it out there and let me cash my check'

It's sad. They just seem like they are so disguisted that their individual franchises got raped so much that they simply don't care. I'm mainly talking about Craven and Carpenter.

Look at Romero though, as he is back to low budgets, but isn't getting the same results.
Carpenter likes his money, and he gets plenty of it with all of the royalties that are owed to him every time a Halloween film is made.
I don't blame him to a degree, as I would love to make money without doing a thing.
Craven has always been hit and miss with his movies, with the emphasis on miss.

Yeah, it happened at a convention, between signings.
It was mild and he was apparently going to go on with business as usual.

I just found this:
UPDATE: We recently heard from John's wife, who told us the following: He did not have a seizure in Orlando. He went there in spite of suffering from the flu. Was exhausted. The combination of the two caused a sudden blood pressure drop which caused him to pass out.

A man of the fans, not many would go half feeling like crap just to see the folks! I wonder when "The Ward" comes out anyway.
Wes's new movie is getting butt raped in reviews with like a 8% on Rotton Tomatoes >_>

My Soul To Take is yet another film that was converted from 2D to 3D, and apparently has the worst 3D opening ever.

Yep it appears that age and being comfortable financially could play a role. Argento is still great though. Mother of Tears may not have been received well but it was better than half the crap that's out there. Also both of his Masters of Horror episodes rank among the best. Overall Argento's work is the best. I would say I love 70% of it which is more than I can say for any other horror director, especially considering he's directed much more than the rest as well.
