So, what did you all think of this one?
I'm a huge fan of Carpenter's version. Every time I watch it, it moves up another spot in my favorites list. It sits in my top 10 and it's probably in the 6-8 range at the moment.
As for this prequel, I liked it for the most part. It's a shame that they covered up the practical effects with mostly poor CGI, but it felt like a different horror theater release than a lot of what we've been getting.
I think a lot of care was taken to make this film match up with the events in Carpenter's version.
And the closing credit sequence gave me goosebumps. Awesome.
There were some negatives. The poor CGI as mentioned and little things like, oh look, flamethrowers here too. Sometimes, it felt like they were going too beat for beat with the '82 version.
Thoughts?

I thought it was dull.

Pros:
1) Kept pretty true to Carpenter's 1984 film 2) The acting was pretty good 3) Pretty good atmosphere 4) Kept me guessing constantly at who the Thing was 5) Added some interesting new elements like the part with the Thing couldn't replicate peoples fake teeth and such 6) Great way to make the ending start off where Carpenter's begins
Cons: 1) A bit too much CGI over practical affects
Overall, a pretty good film really.
Oddly I haven't even seen the actual original "The Thing from Outer Space" ! ;D 2) Aimed for over the top at times

Good points Rebel.
The Thing From Another World is excellent as well, as long as you like old school black and white horror.

I have watched all of Doctor Who's serials from 1963 to 1969 while it was in black an white so I would very much enjoy a black and white horror film!

I liked when the two heads merged as one to make a creature!

Not bad for a recent horror film. My only real hang up is the piss poor CGI. I know they were planning on doing more practical than they did. I have no clue why they changed their minds.

I still need to see this. I'm a big fan of Carpenter's and an even bigger fan of the original. I can remember watching it on AMC when they still played really old movies.

This was well executed for something of recent. Usually when people hear remake, you know what everyone assumes. But this definitely lived up to expectations.
Bits by bits broken down, starting with a well introduced introduction. Then laying the ground work of Carpenter original connecting the dots.
Overall I'll give it a 7.5/10.
CGI was definitely off, no doubt. But nothing can't come close to the Classic, no way in hell.

I love the original so much and really need to see this one. I'm pleased to hear it wasn't bad.

Though this isn't my favourite film, Mary did a pretty convincing job at portraying her role. I like Carpenters take much better IMO.
