Not exactly Horror, though it probably did frighten people back then. The book is wonderful, definately worth a read if you have the time and desire to do so. You won't be sorry, trust me.
The version that was set during the 1950s was amusing, them using an Atomic Bomb on it, and one of the more memorable scenes for me in the 1950s version. For the one based on the 1800s, like the novel, it had to be when they sucked a bunch of people up inside their ships. I am sure stuff like that freaked people out, especially in the 1800s. H.G. Wells was a man ahead of his time, that's for sure.

The thing that makes the original so cool is the ships! they look so dam sweet and the sound of the heat ray blasting is something i will never forget.. War of the Worlds was always shown on Eighties Movies on the tvs in the background.. Im pretty sure it was on in the background in Explorers to name oneiof many.. Watching the shps come out of the craters was superb.. Reall intense scenes along with the preacher getting zapped! Its an alltime scifi classic and along with The Jeff Waynes War of the worlds portraying the story in music, to eventually become a musical and the recent Remake. They drew there plans against us but we love em.. Ya cant beat martians there cool..
