'Going to Pieces' is a good and quite complete review of the history of the slasher movie genre. It succeeds to show quite well the origins of the genre in American horror movies, and then provides quite an extensive review of the development and pick of popularity it reached in the 80s, its decline and its renaissance in the late 90s. Bringing to screen interviews with many of the major creators of some of the more popular films, fans, as well as critics of the genre makes the viewing interesting. I highly recommend this to any Friday the 13th,Nightmare on elm street and 80's slasher fans. Its not 100% accurate.but we see Betsy Palmer,Tom Savini,Wes Craven,Sean Cunningham,John Carpenter, The late Debra Hill and many more famous horror people.
A must have for horror fans.
You can find it on amazon for 5 bucks

I have this as well and I think it is pretty good. It doesn't offer much that is new, but I was happy to see that it did cover some lesser known films. As you said, interesting is probably the best way to describe it. From what I can remember, they don't spend much time or any for that matter on the earlier roots of the slasher.

I really enjoyed it.You're right about not exploring more slashers. But if they really got into detail discussions about every slasher that was released it would be almost 3 or 4 hours long.(i wouldn't mind though)
What i really liked was the Betsy Palmer interview. She explains a lot about the ring on her finger, how she was abused by Elias Voorhess and how he basically didn't want nothing to do with her or her pregnancy(wish we could have seen Jason chop that asshole in half) and how Mrs V went to the salvation army then got a job at Camp crystal lake as the cook.
Its an overall great dvd.
I would also recommend Boogymen to go right along side this.
You can find this one for 74 cents on amazon.
Basically 8 dollars with shipping for 2 great intro documentaries to our favorite Genre, which is horror.

Yes, Going to Pieces is a great movie IMO. I saw it's original airing on Sci-Fi? a few years ago I think. A lot of unheralded slashers are shown and that is a good thing always. Boogeymen is OK for beginners , but I prefer Terror in the Aisles or Terror on Tape, both 80s releases with a wider variety of horror and slashers.

Considering Going to Pieces is a straight to DVD documentary, as far as I know, it definitely should have been expanded past the 2 or so hours that is was.
Boogeymen was among my first 10 DVD's that I bought around the beginning of 2002. It is decent.
