Okay, here is my review of Tod Browning's "Freaks"!
Filmed in 1932 and directed by Tod Browning(Who is famous for directing Dracula.), I found out about this film by watching Dracula on commentary and they talk about a number of times. So I checked it out and I must say it was great!
It starts out with a freak show and the host tells a tell about the origin of one of the freaks he is about to show to his audiences.
It's about a traveling circus felled with clowns and Freaks such as the bearded lady, the world's strongest man, the half man and half woman and so on.
Anyway there is a beautiful woman(Cleopatra) who is a trapeze artist at the circus and there is a midget who is in love with the woman but he already has girlfriend who loves him as well(She is too a midget.). The other woman doesn't love the midget(Hans) back, that is until she finds out that Hans is rich and she and the strongest man(Hercules) plan to get Hans' money. They plan for Cleopatra to play along with Hans and marry him, then kill him in his sleep so Hercules and her could take his money and skip town!
Hans' girlfriend(Frieda) tries to warn him that Cleopatra is only after him for his money but Hans gets angry with her and leaves her.
Latter Hans and Cleopatra get married and after that they and the rest of the freaks have a dinner party. Meanwhile Cleopatra slips poison in Hans' drink, then Cleopatra and Hercules gets drunk and shows affection for each other and Hans gets suspicious, but he drinks the poison anyway but he doesn't die, he gets sick. The next day Cleopatra puts Hans to bed and gives him so called medicine, but Hans spits it out.
Meanwhile, Frieda and the others knew what really happened to Hans and they come up with a plan to get Hans away from them and punish Cleopatra and Hercules for what they did. So while every time Cleopatra or Hercules came out of their train car they'll see every freak staring at them from all different places, from across them, under their car, behind their car, they where everywhere! It was like "Hitchcock's Birds"!
I'm going to stop there so I don't want to ruin it for you.
If you haven't see this one, then check it out, it's a good one!
I give it a 5 out of 5 stars!
You can find the hole movie on YouTube!
