I just got done watching the Wizard of Oz. They are showing on TNT tonight from 8pm to 10:15pm and again at 10:30pm-till
I haven;t watched this in years but I must have watched it over 30 times growing up. I know that because I remember watching it alot and I knew every word to almost every song today.
Its funny because there was one scene in the movie after the Witch of the West throws the flame at Scarecrow. They said you can see a midget hanging himself in the background when there walking down the Yellow Brick Road after that event. I discovered in 1992 for myself that it was a large (non flying) bird opening his wings and not a midget hanging himself.
It was shown in HD tonight and looked great! One REALLY interesting thing I discovered (always knew deep down) is that it was shot in color! 1939!
That means the WolfMan and all the universal and Abbott & Costello classic afterwords where shot in B&W on purpose! That's pretty interesting! They didn't HAVE to go that way but did anyway.
Anyway I LOVED this movie all over again! It was PERFECT! An obvious 5 for 5. The one thing I REALLY LOVE about it is the wicked witch!
WHY WHY WHY have we not seen a movie about witches yet!!!!!!
Is it just me who hasn't found it? I am DYING too see a movie about a green witch! Just like in this movie! A classic green with with the tall had and broom! I LOVE THEM! They are everything about Halloween too me! They are perfect! I wanna make a movie about one making magic spells and the big black pot bubbling! It's just the greatest stuff too me!
Anyway I wonder how everyone else here feels about this great movie.
PS I think Lon Chaney Jr. would have a played a great Lion part!
Was The Movie originally made in color or black and white? Were the Oz scenes colorized later?
The vast majority of The Movie was originally shot in color, and those were all of the Oz scenes. They were not shot in black and white and later colorized. The Kansas scenes were filmed in black and white, but processed so that they appeared in sepia tones — in other words, brown and white. For a time, the sepia tones were dropped, and Kansas was shown on television, in theaters, and on videotape in black and white. The only sepia in The Movie was Aunt Em's appearance in the Witch's crystal ball. For The Movie's fiftieth anniversary in 1989, the sepia was restored (one videodisk release had it in sepia even earlier), and has been there ever since.
