A child's gimmick?
That is quite the overreaction.
Let's not bad mouth well received movies like Coraline and Avatar, which use it to enhance the story, not to poke things in your face, which some movies most certianly do.

See?
Any technology can be used very well or very poorly.
Some movies have great CGI, while most SyFy originals look like crap.

I just don't think it should be in horror right away. It could detract the fear away from the audience. I mean Friday the 13th part 2 will be in 3D and it's just a bit too early IMO

It has been used for horror movies since before every active member of this board was born. There was a wave of it in the 50's and one in the 80's. Remember that they used the analglyph format with the red and green glasses, not the digital Real3D that is in effect now. As obvious as it might be, it is a great gimmick for the horror genre in terms of getting the general audience interested in going to the theater, as people love to see things jumping out at them. Saw 6 didn't do that well but got much better reviews then the previous installment, so they stand a good chance of bringing back those people, especially with the added bonus of the traps being shown in 3D.

I FINALLY got to see the FIRST saw Movie last night. a girl friend of mine let me borrow her three movie set. They are all three the R rated versions (not the unrated so yall will have to tell me if I am missing something).
I give the first movie a 5 out of 5 stars. It was very original. The characters were likable. The plot was pretty good with a sick moral twist to it. I guess two wrongs DO make a right in this case. If the sequels live up to this one, I am watching Saw II tonight, then this will probably be "the best" franchise of the 21st century thus far. Not many movies get franchises now as we all know. The music was subtle and it had an underlying twist. Kudos to the director and writer of the first for a good job. The only movie that even remotely resembles this format is the "Cube" movie fro 1998.
Things I was expecting yet did not see were the gore. I thought everybody said these movies were so gory and people would just faint? The first one wasn't that bad at all. I've seen worse. I want my girlfriend to faint and Evil Dead did an almost better job at that : D

The first one wasn't all that graphic. Other than the sawing off the foot scene. It was the rest which got more and more over the top. I like part 2. But it's one of the weaker films in the franchise to me. The latest one is a better film IMHO.

I agree the second saw is weaker. I'll just post my reactions to it since I thought the original was pretty darn good. Here I'll just copy and paste what I said on Facebook over to here: --- This movie is definietly a step DOWN from the original for me. 3.5 out of 5 stars for me. I may knock it up if the III one improves. Still original and the twist ending isn't too bad if you pay close attention to listening to John the Jigsaw killer. The gore is more in this one as yall have told me. Massive issues here: I DID NOT CARE WHO DIED. I could not emphathize with a single one of these characters. I wanted them to die. Unlike the first where the characters are just a few and not so many puzzles to go through, the characters are well more developed and the scenes with the little girl and his wife and such were more powerful. This movie on the other hand, borrows its premise from another movie. This movie borrows the premises very heavily from the Cube movie from 1998. I thought I was watching that almost. At least some of the characters were more likable. The only character that got any development in this movie was Tobin Bell's John the Jigsaw character. That's it. I could at least somewhat emphathize with his sick morality moments. Gah.... See More PROS: The Gore looked real. Pretty interesting plot. Tried something different yet failed in executing it. It's thrillin and keeps you watching to find out what is going to happen with the hidden subplot. CONS: I hated all the characters wanted them to all die. It's not personal such as the first one at all. It borrows its premise heavily from the Cube movie. But it's watchable at least. I Hope the III one I'll watch next Friday will be better

Have you watched 3 yet? If so did you like it more? I saw it . . . today and Yep I did like it more than number 2 but not quite as much as 1 thus far. I will just do as i did before adn copy and paste my review from Facebook over to here. I have to wait for 4 5 and 6 and they will be unrated unlike these 3. ---------------------- DRASTIC IMPROVEMENT FROM NUMBER2. Just to make that perfectly clear. This movie gets a 4.5 out of 5 stars. This one unlike II was not a Cube redux. Hmm I wonder where the director got those chains in the flesh thing from? Could it be Hellraiser? I think so! ;D Character development is MUCH stronger in this one and the characters are much more likable in this one. The suspense and intensity was pretty darn good in this one. Now I have to wonder. John is supposedly killed off in this one. I hope to God Lionsgate didn't rape their butthole with number IV I know how these sequels go after something is suppose to be the end and the one who produces them decides money is much more pleasing than the content of a movie. It goes down hill but I have to wait to get to seee IV, V, VI which are all unrated directors cuts to me to view *sigh*. But I did enjoy this one much better than II but it did not defeat number 1. Number 1 still holds a special place in my heart. But the ending was pretty darn good as was two but I find the ending of three a bit more captivating than number two but I am loving the surprise endings. I do have to say I hate the heavy metal music associated with these movies. Screaming is not music. True Dat. I just hope the sequels don't go to the nuts zone. So many franchises become desperate to remain alive for the sake of fan boys and money. 4.5/5 stars.

I've heard number 4 has multiple surprises at the end. Now is it true each one of these were "suppose" to be the last movie? Then Lionsgate got money loving and decided to say "one more year!" Number 3 sounded pretty final to me. I have heard terrible things about number 5 right down to the "Most surprising ending you have ever seen" or whatever that movie's tag line was.
With the first three, so far the first one is still in first place in my ranking of favorites. Looks like from what I hear number 6 will run a close competition for that spot.
Do you think the 7th one coming out this year should be the last? These movies as they go on sadly have to become desperate to remain fresh. Do we really want to see John the Jigsaw Man goes to Hell or Jigsaw X _X
Thus far:
I
III
II
II I just don't know what happened but it reminded me of the Cube movie

I've never heard that each film was supposed to be the last. I know the original people who created the characters stopped being involved after 3. They were done with their story. Hence John Kramer dying. It was the studio that decided to keep them going. If they can continue to be as good as 6 was I don't mind them continuing. I do think it will be harder and harder to continue to include Tobin Bell in the story if they continue on. I mean how much video footage and back story can they tell on a dead character? They can't resurrect him like Jason etc. so I don't know what they could do with him. I don't think the movies would do well if he wasn't in them since he is the star.

I FINALLY got to see IV tonight. The girl I got these borrowed from finally got IV, V, and VI down here 15 days later thanks to the post office loosing the package! Here is my review I put on Facebook I'll just copy it on to here. I ranked it lower than III, higher than II but nothing beats number 1. --------------------- My official number for this one is 3.5/5 stars. What did I give the last one anyway? I know it was 4 at least. I don't know what to say. The first one was so simple yet effective. The second was a massive letdown. The third was a notch up and this one was a notch DOWN. Let me explain why.... See More 1) I had no idea what was going on half the time. What was going on anyway? The characters I saw the most of were decent. Not the most likable and did not as usual I have seen a trend touched a nerve like the first one did. Come on people! 2) Gore was a notch UP. Probably the goriest to date of all of them. Now bear in mind that gore has no bearing on a film like this since I am going by acting and story. Some of the best movies I have ever seen horror wise are not THAT gory. 3) The twist at the end was simple. Didn't see it coming or anything like that but it wasn't terrible. I had a feeling when John was killed off as FAST as these series did it it would be a downtrail from there. Sort of like my beloved Friday the 13th. After the fifth one it became a downtrail from there. Overall. Good. Not great. Not terrible. Good acting and direction a usual. Very original which is great during remake mania going around. Looking forward to V or as Jared say I may cry for all the wrong reasons during V ) Rankings: I III IV II - Two is still the worst so far. 3.5/5 stars for this movie.

I forgot to put my Saw V and VI reviews on here : S Well I hated V and liked VI better so there ;D I liked the first one, III and VI. And didn't really care for II, IV or V. Maybe VII will be the FINAL movie. Cary Elwes Returns for Saw VIIWith the main guy from the first film coming back, maybe that is a signal they are going to give a good conclusion to this long horror franchise.
