I'll go big 16 million.
I saw the film last night. I loved it. With one viewing I'd say it's at a minimum tied for second place in my favorite TCM's. I loved the story. Thought Daddario was a breath of fresh air and did a great job in her role. Speaking of doing great. Dan Yeager was specfuckingtacular! He was channeling Gunnar Hansen big time. He had the look, moves, even sounds down perfectly. He did everything Gunnar did and even added to the part. He's the second best LF of all time. No one has even come close to doing this well as LF. I definitely recommend seeing the film. I may be a huge fan of the franchise but I think my opinion still has merit. So if any of you are on the fence about seeing it I suggest you hop off that fence and go see this. ;D

The reviews should start pouring in here.

I already gave my review. I didn't give it a number rating though.
An easy 4 out of five for me. If I had the money I'd go see it again. If this film does poorly it's only due to movie goers being sheep. Which they are. If they are told a movie should be a hit, it is. If they are told it's coming out in the wrong month, or horror is dead or not a worthy genre etc. The believe that too. This film supposedly has "bad word of mouth". Even though it just came out. The bad word of mouth is the big name critics. Who told everyone months ago that due to the film having it's date moved it must be a stinker. Then once it comes out they of course say it is. Well they don't want their predictions to look stupid so they'd say that no matter the quality. Plus low budget horror rarely gets good word of mouth. The critics have hated low budget horror since the 80's. Unfortunately unlike back in the 80's the average movie goer now listens to those opinions more. Letting it make their minds up for them before they even watch. Then they sit in the theater doing everything but watch. They play on their phones. So of course when it comes time for that movie goer to give their opinion they have to base it on what the critics they've read have said and word of mouth from other movie goers who didn't form a real opinion either. I watched the film. It was very enjoyable. I'd go see it again if I could. I hope this is one of the rare times a film the critics have tried to prejudge into failure actually does good business. Because the filmmakers made a film worthy of a sequel.

If it doesn't do as good as expected, there is also another big reason why: It opened the same time when The Hobbit, Les Mis and Django Unchained are all posting solid numbers. That is bound to cut into business.

It still deserves to make a profit. I hope it does. I hope between what it makes in the theaters and home release it hits whatever magic number it needs to get a sequel. Because it deserves one.

I didn't like it.
It had some potential, but in my opinion it was pretty flat. Seemed like a DTV movie to me.
I think it won't do well, and not because movie-goers are sheep, but because it's a limited niche audience. 3D is a dead gimmick and only seems to work with 100 million dollar movies, anyway. Leatherface is a tired villain, much like all of the horror icons whose movies haven't done that well; respectable, but not well.
Facts are, the average person who will watch Les Mis won't go and see this. The average person who will watch Django may not either. Maybe 10% of the Hobbit audience will. Horror has always had a smaller target audience and right now slashers are not in. Old horror icons have long been jokes, gimmicks, laughing stocks-- "Oh, is he dead yet..." wink, wink.
I say the movie makes $18 million total.

I guess I'm rare. I like all types of horror and don't have to wait for a sub genre to be "in" in order to enjoy the classic monsters. LF, Jason, Freddy, Michael etc. will always be enjoyable no matter what is "in" at the moment. Nothing about this film looked DTV to me. It looked more up to date than the original but not as flashy as the remake. Horror deserves more respect and fan love and loyalty than it gets. I'll take this type of film over just about all the dreck that Hollywood puts out. Horror deserves to get blockbuster attention. Yet crap like Twilight makes hundreds of millions. I guess writing for 12 year old girls is what it takes to get the attention of movie goers these days.

Mine was about half full. But it was also an early showing the day before general release at a theater that hadn't advertised the early showing. The only reason I knew about the early showing is it being mentioned on so FB pages. They didn't even have the title of the film up on the marquee yet. So considering how few people in my area would even know about the screening I'd say it was pretty good.

I am the same, but I also can see that when it comes to horror it seems like the movies that do well are leaning more towards sci-fi or supernatural. It's sad that slashers rarely get the recognition that they deserve. It's also sad that when one goes to the theaters and makes 20 million it's called a success.

I know you didn't care for it. I did. Different strokes and all that. I just hope it can make enough money for a sequel. For 2 reasons 1. I liked the film so naturally I'd like to see a sequel. The other reason it would be nice for it to do well is the precedence it would set for this type of film. If a film that's had a remake goes back to the original continuity does well, then it's possible other franchises could get a chance to do the same. The talk of going back to Tommy Jarvis played by Feldman in a Friday the 13th isn't remotely likely unless a film like TC 3D does well. So I hope it does better than your 18 million total prediction.

I hope at a minimum it makes it's production budget back with even a small profit above that. Then sells well on DVD. If it does at least that well I can be hopeful for the future of both this franchise and slashers in general.

I'm seeing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ( I am calling it that, it's been called that since 74, why change it now?) in 3D this afternoon.

The marketing department probably thought that a shorter name would more appealing, or something like that.
Also, how was Trey Songz?

I heard he gets carved up real nice.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Three words, if they honestly did it for marketing reason, whoever came up with that needs a chainsaw shoved up his or her ass.

I see it is receiving mostly negative reviews. The top review on IMDB is a negative review and said people actually booed when it was over. Had a modest debut though. No clue when I"ll see it.

The title card that shows at the beginning of the film says Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D. That was the initial name of the film. The reason for the change I've heard was the theater shooting in Colorado. Most of the news outlets were calling it the Colorado Massacre or Colorado Theater Massacre. That's when the decision was made to change it to just Texas Chainsaw 3D. I think it's still technically considered Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D. Even with the advertising change. Trey Songz was fine. They didn't have him kung fu fighting Leatherface or anything stupid like that. He basically filled the role of her boyfriend. Nothing about him stood out either positively or negatively. As for people booing the screen? I call bullshit on that. The people in my theater seemed to enjoy the film. No sign of anyone upset like when I saw The Halloween remake. When I saw that I saw people fall asleep and even walk out of the theater before it was over. With this film everyone seemed to be enjoying it. Laughing when they should have. Even had a couple girls scream during the jump scares. If anyone was unhappy with the film in my viewing they did a great job of hiding it. If someone actually had people boo the screen when it was over which I still don't believe then it was a group of morons. In fact a group of rude morons. I've seen plenty of films in the theater I didn't like. Some I had to force myself to finish watching. Not once did I ever feel the need to boo the screen. Because I know how pointless doing it would be and also how rude it would be. So once again I call bullshit. It was just someone making up a story they thought would sound sensational enough to get their post some attention. LF let us know what you think once you've seen it.
